Where do I go? The Majors golf season is over for another year, and no Major for Tiger. The Vikings lose 27-13 in their first pre-season game at home to Houston. The Twins are going nowhere, drifting through another losing season.
Paula Deen’s favorite football player is Riley Cooper , wide receiver of the Philadelphia Eagles. New York Yankee star Alex Rodriguez, the face of performance-enhancing drugs, is suspended for a record 211 games by Major League Baseball, yet incredibly he continues to play while he appeals.
Thirteen other players were suspended 50 games each as part of MLB’s biogenesis case. What does it say when 13 of the 14 players are either Latino or Dominican-born players? Just one American-born player, Ryan Braun of Milwaukee and the former league MVP, was suspended.
Tiger has 14 Major wins, the only athlete to set a lifetime goal of winning more Majors than Jack Nicklaus’s 18. Jason Dufner captured his first Major title with his victory at the PGA Championship. He shot a Major Championship record-tying 63 on Friday and 68 on Sunday to beat Jim Furyk by two shots.
Tiger has gone five years and 18 Majors now since his last win in June of 2008 in the United States Open. At age 37, he is still tied with Nicklaus; when Nicklaus was 37, he had 14 Major wins also.
Nineteen of the last 21 Majors have been won by a first-time Major winner, which speaks to how strong the world of golf has become. Only one player in golf history has won five Majors after the age of 38. That’s Ben Hogan, so it can be done and has been done, and I’m confident Tiger will still break Jack’s mark.
The Vikings’ loss to Houston showed that right now they have much more work to do. I’m a firm believer that when two playoff teams meet in a preseason game, the best team still wins. Rookie wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, wearing some guy named Randy Moss’ old number 84 jersey, looked good.
I’m really happy for Joey Browner, who will be inducted into the Vikings’ Ring of Honor Sunday night, October 27, when they play the Green Bay Packers. Philadelphia’s Cooper is in a position where I can’t see him surviving. Not in the City of Brotherly Love.
