She is preceded in death by her husband, Welton P. Barnett, and children, Walter Eugene Holbrook, Joanne Katherine (nee Holbrook) Henderson and Ronald David Holbrook. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Carolyn Lee (Montgomery) Holbrook, Minneapolis; her stepson, Welton “Tony” Barnett, Minneapolis; her six grandchildren, Martina (nee Holbrook) Brown, Steven Holbrook, Julian Montgomery, Iris Montgomery, Tania Montgomery, Ebony (nee Montgomery) Davis; her 12 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Joanna enjoyed a long career in cosmetology and education. She founded Career Beauty Academy, the first and only African American beauty school to ever exist in the State of Minnesota. She also founded the Cosmetology program in the Minneapolis Public Schools. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Education from the University of Minnesota at the age of 60. She was the eldest living member and past Worthy Matron of the Electa Chapter #3 Order of the Eastern Star PHA, Minnesota Jurisdiction.
Services will be held Monday, May 13 at St. Peters AME Church, 401 E. 41st St., Minneapolis, where she was a member for 65 years. Visitation, 9 am; Eastern Star Service 10 am; funeral, 11 am. Interment 1:35 pm at Fort Snelling Cemetery.
