Page, Menifee lead Highland Park to opener victory
The 2012 prep football season started off with a bang last Thursday as some of the state’s best mixed it up on the gridiron.
TYCEL PAGE, a senior wide receiver who might be one of the best prep football players you never heard of, and junior running back MALIK MENIFEE paved the way in leading St. Paul Highland Park to a nonconference season-opening 41-10 victory over Jordan last Friday evening. Page caught touchdown passes of 32, 27 and 40 yards, and Menifee rushed for 119 yards and two scores for the Scots.
GABRIEL WALKER ran for a touchdown and caught another from quarterback FELIX TAYLOR as defending City Conference champ St. Paul Central edged Northfield 14-8 in a nonconference contest. Wide receiver JULIAN REED provided two extra-point conversions in the victory.
KEELON BROOKINS, a defensive back and University of Wisconsin recruit, intercepted two passes and caught another for a touchdown in helping the Tartans defeat Hill Murray 19-13. Running back KEENAN BELLEPHANT rushed for 88 yards.
Running back RAYMONTE MAYNARD (149 yards rushing) scored twice; wide receiver JAMISON WHITING (62 yards receiving) caught a pass for another; and quarterback MORLEY MATTHEWSON (65 yards passing, two touchdowns) passed for a score and ran in another for pay dirt, leading defending City Conference champ Minneapolis Washburn to a 43-0 win over Minneapolis Edison.
Quarterback BRICEON SCOTT-BURCH (250 yards passing) threw for two touchdowns; running back BILLY KELLOG (207 yards rushing) scored twice; fullback ASHANTI PAYNE (83 yards rushing) ran for two touchdowns; defensive back/wide receiver MALIK RUCKER (68 yards receiving) caught one touchdown pass; and LEROY TAYLOR had 106 receiving yards in a 49-41 setback to Benilde St. Margaret’s in a North Suburban showdown.
High school football is definitely back!
