A fundraising party for the Jean M. Covington “Character Counts” Scholarship will be held Saturday, January 21, 4-7 pm, at the home of Steve and former Minneapolis mayor Sharon Sayles-Belton, 3233 Edmund Boulevard, Minneapolis.
The Jean M. Covington “Character Counts” Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of Jean M. Covington a longtime teacher at Anwatin Middle School in Minneapolis. Two “Character Counts” scholarships are awarded annually to Anwatin graduates. Recipients receive the scholarship on graduation from middle school on condition they finish high school and are accepted by an accredited four-year college or university. These students are awarded $2,000 per year during their four years of college attendance.
The Jean Covington Scholarship has been in existence since 1991. Because much of the fund was in the stock market, it is in need of replenishing after recent losses. The scholarship fund has no administrative costs; all donations go to providing financial assistance to awardees.
Over 50 students have received Character Counts scholarships; among other institutions, scholarship recipients have attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota, Columbia, Dillard, NYU, Carlton and Florida A&M.
To RSVP to the fundraiser, contact William Covington at 206-661-6293 or wcovington@aol.com, or Michael Belton at 612 922-1357 or mkbelton@gmail.com. To make a donation to the fund, send it to Jean M. Covington Foundation, c/o Larry Bailey, Treasurer, Jean Covington Foundation, 1900 Schooner Court, Columbia, South Carolina 29229.
